Laetitia and Howard Kelly

Howard Kelly, a successful surgeon and founding member of the Johns Hopkins Medical College, maintained a home in downtown Baltimore on Eutaw Place, but like most professionals of his time, left the city in the sweltering summertime. With nine children, the Kellys needed a spacious summer home.

In 1897 the Kellys paid $12,000 for 196 acres on the western edge of Bel Air. The Baltimore architectural  firm of Wyatt and Nolting designed the home, a tribute to the Palladian villas Laetitia knew in Prussia.
